Brewing beer is both an art and a science, and it requires a lot of hard work and dedication to create a great tasting beer. As a microbrewery, we take great pride in our brewing process and we'd like to share it with you. Here's a step-by-step guide on how we brew beer:
Milling - The first step in the brewing process is milling the malted grains. We use a mill to crush the grains and expose the starchy insides. The resulting grist is then mixed with hot water to create a mash.
Mashing - The mash is the process of mixing the grist with hot water to convert the starches in the grains into fermentable sugars. The mash is typically held at a specific temperature for a specific amount of time to ensure proper conversion.
Lautering - After mashing, the resulting liquid is separated from the solid grains in a process called lautering. The liquid, now called wort, is then boiled.
Boiling - The wort is boiled for a specific amount of time, typically one to two hours. During this time, hops are added at different intervals to impart bitterness, flavor, and aroma to the beer.
Cooling - After boiling, the hot wort needs to be rapidly cooled to a temperature that is safe for the yeast. We use a heat exchanger to cool the wort down to around 70°F.
Fermenting - The cooled wort is then transferred to a fermenter, where yeast is added. The yeast converts the sugars in the wort into alcohol and carbon dioxide, resulting in beer.
Conditioning - After fermentation, the beer is transferred to a conditioning tank to age and mellow out. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the beer style.
Carbonating - Once conditioning is complete, the beer is carbonated. This can be done naturally through a process called bottle conditioning, or artificially through carbonation tanks.
Packaging - Finally, the beer is packaged in kegs, cans, or bottles and sent out to retailers or served fresh on tap in our taproom.
Brewing beer is a labor-intensive process that requires a lot of skill and attention to detail. As a microbrewery, we take great pride in crafting unique and flavorful beers that our customers love. We hope you enjoyed this glimpse into our brewing process and we invite you to stop by our taproom to taste our beers for yourself. Cheers!
